Gabrielle Roth

Who is Gabrielle Roth?
Gabrielle Roth (February 4, 1941 – October 22, 2012) was an American dancer, musician, author, and movement pioneer who created the 5Rhythms dance practice. Born in the West and later living in the East, she developed a revolutionary approach to movement meditation that has spread globally.

In the 1960s
In the 1960s, Roth arrived at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, where she became involved with the Human Potential Movement. There, Fritz Perls, the founder of Gestalt Therapy, recognized her background in teaching movement and invited her to teach dance to his therapy groups. This experience became formative in her development of what would later become the 5Rhythms practice.

The Dance of Transformation
Roth had spent a decade teaching movement to children, elders, people-at-risk, and those with disabilities before refining her approach at Esalen. Through her own dance practice, she experienced profound spiritual insights, describing how she “danced till I disappeared inside the dance” and felt “totally connected, body and soul”. This led to her realization that people had become estranged from their bodies as a form of social control, inspiring her mission to reconnect people with their physical selves.

Gabrielle Roth Teachings & Philosophy
In the late 1970s, Roth formally developed the 5Rhythms—a movement practice based on five distinct styles: flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical, and stillness. She founded The Moving Center in New York City in 1977, which became the vehicle for spreading her work. Her approach is grounded in the philosophy that everything is energy moving in waves, patterns, and rhythms, and that by moving the body, one can still the mind and connect to one’s essence.
